“Ever since a week after the Tate murders, they have been desperately looking for someone to pin it on. Two hundred deputies and three helicopters descended on the ranch and arrested us. One kneed me in the chest, breaking three ribs. They kept me three days and released me. They rearrested me again the next day and again released me after three days. That time I decided to go to the mountains and get away from the harassment.
I decided to go to the mountains to talk to God, to apologize for nineteen hundred years of this mess. That’s when they got me and brought me here.
You want to know my philosophy? I’ll tell you. I am not from your society. I have spent most of my life in a world of bars and solitary confinement. My philosophy comes from underneath the boots and sticks and clubs they beat people who come from the wrong side of the tracks. People like me are society’s scapegoats. They keep getting away with it because no one will say anything.
I have been in jail for twenty years. My body has been locked up but my mind is free. When I get outside on the street, I see all kinds of people whose bodies are free, but their minds are all locked up.
You know they can’t do anything to me. They can’t kill me. They can destroy my body, but they can’t kill me.”

I couldn’t sleep, so I was looking through old audio conversations I had with Charlie and listened. This story he told me really made me think and I thought I’d share it.

Charles Manson: When I was out in the desert, I walked to the store and bought a handful of penny tootsie rolls. They (the girls) asked me who they were for, and I said, “My Indian friends.” They said, “What are you talking about? There are no Indians out here.” I said, “Are you crazy?” So, I went to this old Indian grave yard stoned on LSD and I put a piece of candy on the graves. I stayed there all night with the gravedancers and I came back and the girls were screaming— mad at me, (in a whiny voice) “Where were you? Where were you?” I said to them, “I was with my Indian friends.”Me: This was Death Valley?Charles Manson: Yeah, yeah. And when I went back, after all those people were killed, I went with this kid named Bell. We were stoned on Talache. Know what Talache is? Talacha?Me: No.Charles Manson: Devil’s Root?Me: Oh, Belladonna?Charles Manson: Yeah, yeah. We were stoned on that and we went to the grave yard and I put the candy on the graves and waited… and waited… and I saw these little blue demons come out.Me: Oh God. You serious?Charles Manson: (Laughing) We ran, jumped in the dune buggy and left there going about a hundred miles per hour. The kid was screaming— holding on— and I looked to the side… (starts to whisper) and I saw the blue demon running beside us— beside the buggy. Me: I can’t imagine how scary that was.Charles Manson: A couple days later they busted me and I’ve been here ever since.Me: Yeah.Charles Manson: Once I had this dream, that I had this flower that can bring anyone back to life. So, I went to that graveyard and put the flower on this grave of an Indian Chief and I brought him back to life. He says, “What the fuck did you do that for? Get out of my dream, I know what I am doing.” Yeah… (laughs)

“I did wonder why earth people got old so fast. Staying a child, I just never went to school and learned how to be a “people.” My life itself has been outlawed ever since my father died in the War and my mom went to prison for trying to feed me. For over fifty years I’ve been raised in your punishments, not for what I did or do, but because I’m not a bully like you.”

Ted occasionally exhibited disturbing behavior, even at that early age. Julia recalled awakening one day from a nap to find herself surrounded by knives from the Cowell kitchen; her three-year-old nephew was standing by the bed, smiling.
